Consumption, the trend is reversed: + 8% in Italy in 5 years
With a sharp turnaround compared to the past, Italian wine consumption has increased by 8% over the last five years. This is what emerges from an analysis by Coldiretti on the basis of the OIV data disseminated during the meeting on Wine Markets and innovations in the vineyard promoted at Palazzo Rospigliosi in Rome by the Coldiretti wine market support committee, coordinated from the oenologist Riccardo Cotarella and enriched by the technical skills of prof. Attilio Scienza and the General Manager of Ismea Raffaele Borriello.
Italy with 22.6 million hectoliters in 2017 is ranked third among the largest consumers behind the United States with 32.7 million and a growth of 5.7% over the five-year period and France with 27 million, but 2.8% decline over the period considered. The trend of increasing consumption in Italy - underlines Coldiretti - is second only to China, which thanks to a growth of 8.2% in the five-year period ranks fifth in the consumer countries with 17.9 million hectoliters, behind to Germany with 20.1 million but with a stagnate trend (-1.3%) in the same period.
A revolution is taking place on the tables of Italians with consumption that after having reached the minimum have reversed the trend with a decisive turn towards the quality of wine that - underlines Coldiretti - has become the emblem of a slow, attentive lifestyle to the psycho-physical balance that helps to feel good with oneself, to contrast with the unregulated intake of alcohol.
At dinner with the wines: "Bramito della Sala"
"Bramìto della Sala" Umbria IGT, 2017
Marchesi Antinori Company
In the area near Orvieto, just a few kilometers away stands an imposing medieval castle which is surrounded by 500 hectares of vineyards from which a discrete white wine is produced, the well known "Bramìto della Sala". The grapes with which this wine is then produced is 100% Chardonnay. The soil, rich in fossil and clay sediments, involves a certain minerality and above all an elegance of the wine. The must of the bunches were transferred partly in wood and partly in stainless steel vats where the alcoholic fermentation took place.
Despite the year 2017, has been dry, to solve the problem of water shortage has been used the method of drip irrigation which has contributed to an excellent harvest of healthy grapes and the production of a wine of excellent freshness.
This wine has a pleasant bright straw. At first impact there is a prevalence of scents like citrus (lemon and grapefruit), but also of white flowers like jasmine. The taste is solemn and pleasant. It is a body wine and above all soft. It is fresh and the flavor is barely perceptible. One can guess a particular balance between the various gustatory characters. With the retro olfactory sensations it is medium-fine and as a nature of aromas the hint of ripe yellow fruit (yellow apple) is emphasized.
The combinations that can be made are with cheeses such as gorgonzola and also with white meats.
